Music

Mariko Terashi is particularly interested in the piano adaptation of 17th/18th century French harpsichord music, and has continued to deepen her understanding of this repertoire, notably in dialogue with Huguette Dreyfus, the renowned, now late French harpsichordist.

Mariko has developed her own playing style that retains the poise and ornamentation of the original music, while exploring the warmer timbre of the piano. Regarded as ‘offering fresh insights into music’, she responds with ‘delicate nuance’ and ‘tremendous emotional depth’.

Her latest CD, ‘Carlos de Seixas, François Couperin, Jean-Philippe Rameau’, released last November, has been met with enthusiasm, receiving great reviews internationally. Selected as a recommended CD by the newspaper YOMIURI (one of the largest Japanese newspapers, with a circulation of 13,5 million), her CD has also received a prize by the record magazine “Record Geijutsu” and has been broadcasted on Antena 2, the Portuguese radio station.

“Terashi’s playing is elegant, sober, and poetic, mining for more sonority than could ever be obtained from a harpsichord, while at no time overwhelming the compositions featured on this CD.”

— Rafael de Acha (Rafael Music Notes)

“The year is only a couple of weeks old and already we’ve got what must surely be one of our albums of the year, a beautiful collection of piano pieces.
Terashi’s playing is sensitive, imposing her own interpretation of the music without ever losing the original sound. We’ve played it early in the morning to get going, and late at night to relax.”

— Jeremy Condliffe (The Chronicle)

“Terashi’s account of the Adagio of the Sonata No. 8 proves there is real emotional weight here, while the A major (No. 59) is meltingly lovely. There remains much to enjoy, particularly Terashi’s  limpid way with ‘L’entretien des Muses’ and her sense of space and exploration in the François Couperin pieces from four Ordres

— Colin Clarke (International Piano)

Mariko Terashi – Baroque keyboard works
(Carlos de Seixas, François Couperin, Jean-Philippe Rameau)

“Brilliant Japanese pianist Mariko Terashi has loved the music of the baroque since a very early age. This new album presents her beautifully warm yet virtuosic playing on a modern piano of classics by three composers central to the development of baroque keyboard music: the French masters Couperin and Rameau, and the Portuguese Carlos de Seixas. A superlative concert program.”
